Chapter 30

Arch knew the moment Lacy Cobb walked into the vestibule of Java Joe’s, the quaint little coffee shop they’d frequented when they lived together in Chicago. It wasn’t the jingle of the bell over the door or the sweep of cooler air that propelled her forward where she stopped to blow hot air onto her hands. It was her aura. The first time he had the ability to tell she’d walked into a space without even seeing her, he should have known. Now, he just felt like the worst kind of scared asshat.

Arch breathed in a ragged breath and felt a sense of calm sweep over him. Even if she told him to get fucked, even if she slapped his impertinent face, he’d say what he wanted to say. He’d say what she deserved to hear, what he felt, and then she could make her own choice about their future.

Lacy spotted him, and a wave of nausea infiltrated his gut when she stalked over, face devoid of expression. No smile of welcome for him. Still she looked good. Damn good. And healthy. But this was still going to be harder than he thought. She’d already made up her mind not to open the door even a crack and Lacy was nothing if not stubborn. Well, fuck that. He’d use a battering ram if he had to.

Arch waved a hand in greeting, but it went limp and seemed to hover in the air for an eternity until it fell back to his side. An unexpected sense of loss sabotaged his confidence for this last conversation. Did he really have a chance?

“Arch,” Lacy said, sliding into the leather wingback beside his and opposite a real wood burning fireplace. He knew she loved this particular alcove, so he’d chosen it for just that reason. He really did just want to make her happy. Forever.

And ever.

He set her favorite drink in front of her. A pumpkin spice latte. She ignored it and pierced him with a censuring glare.

“Lacy, I need to say something to you, and I need you to sit there until I’ve finished. Can you at least give me that?”

He hadn’t wanted to sound so demanding and desperate, but the truth remained…he was desperate. If she got up and left him again, would he survive the fallout?

She snuggled deep into the chair and unzipped her coat. “I can do that.”

He wished she’d at least take a sip of the spicy coffee. It might mellow her. But he wasn’t going to catch a break when he needed one the most.

“I will never forgive myself for how I handled myself after the shooting. I acted like a scared child, uncomfortable, too uncomfortable to face my own demons. My mother wasn’t proud of me. More importantly, I wasn’t proud of myself. And I’m still fighting those feelings. I know I’m not worthy of you. Not worthy of a second chance. But all I know is I can’t imagine my life without you. My love for you is so deep and pure, I can’t live if I can’t have you.
